Why Filipinos eat Balut?

Why do Filipinos eat Balut? What is Balut? Balut is a popular Filipino delicacy snack  and is a duck egg thats not fully developed, probably 10 to 20 days old. Growing up in the Philippines, I was accustomed to eating balut especially in the evening time as a snack.

Balut is a street vendor snack, very popular in the cities but also in small communities. Balut is like eating a hotdog in America. Vendors would push carts full of Balut shouting, “baluuuuttttttttttt.” I prefer eating Balut with salt on the side and particularly the yellow hard part of the egg. Balut is also very popular when the older Filipinos get together and drink beer and liqueur. The wives often served Balut as a cocktail snack which goes well with the drinks.

Next time you’re around Filipinos or at a Filipino party abroad, ask if they have Balut. Give it a try, it wont hurt try, just grossed out.
